1. Irish Ispat (former Irish Steel Site)
Cllr. Mulvihill read out the findings of recent research done by the National Cancer Register pointing out its relevance to the recent controversy over the Irish Ispat Site. He revealed that the area of Cobh had rates of Cancer 44% higher than surrounding areas.
Cllr. Mulvihill also expressed regret that Cobh T.C. and local T.D.’s were ignored as regards requests for a meeting with Minister John Gormley.
Cllr. Histon stated that there had been a lot of scaremongering in relation to the issue and asked Cllr. Mulvihill to provide more specific details of the incidence of Cancer in the Cobh.
Cllr. Doyle welcomed the Ministers stated intention to carry out a baseline health study for the area.
Cllr. Crowley stated that the priority was to have the material in the site removed and not just capped. He also expressed his disappointment with the minister who stated that he wants to reform and give more power to local government but has now seen fit to ignore their request for a meeting.
Cllr. Whitty stated that the issue had been discussed at a previous meeting and that this was also public knowledge for many years. Cllr. Whitty also questioned whether all the media had been invited to the meeting.
Cllr Doyle welcomed the calling of a meeting on the issue and stated that certain knowledge in relation to the site had not been made available to the public.
Cllr. Meade also welcomed the calling of the meeting and expressed disappointment at the refusal of the minister to meetings with the councillors.
Cllr. John Mulvihill proposed that the Council draft a statement to the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government. This was seconded by Cllr. Crowley.
