Enviromental Protection:
AIMS: To ensure environmental conditions are conductive to health and amenity. Cobh Town Council’s Functions in relation to Sanitary Services are:
1.Promotion of Waste Reduction and Recycling. 2.Collection and Disposal of Domestic and Commercial Refuse. 3.Provision and maintenance of Burial Grounds. 4.Implementation of the Council’s Litter Management Plan. 5.Licensing of Caravan and Camping Sites. 6. Monitoring and Enforcement in respect of Dangerous Buildings and structures. 7.Monitoring and Enforcement in respect of Derelict Sites. 8.Monitoring and Enforcement regarding Public Health Nuisances. 9. Monitoring and Enforcement regarding Indiscriminate Dumping and Breaches of the Waste Management Act, 1996 (as amended). 10. Provisions and Maintenance of Public Conveniences.

1.Promotion of Waste Reduction and Recycling:
The Council actively promotes Waste Reduction and Recycling as part of its Waste Management Policy through the operation of “Bring Centres” for the deposit of glass, cans and paper at two locations within Cobh. These sites are serviced by Rehab Partnership Ltd.
Quarterly newsletters about Waste Management Strategy are distributed to each household in the region by Cork County Council.
Under the Sanitary Services Legislation, the Council is entitled to serve Notices on Property owners where, in the opinion of the Council, the property is dangerous.In cases of emergency the Council is empowered to render such properties safe.
Under the provisions of the Derelict Sites Act, 1990, the Council is entitled to serve Notices on the owners/occupiers of Derelict Sites requiring that steps be taken to remove the dereliction.Cobh Town Council maintains a Register of Derelict Sites on a Divisional basis which is available for public inspection.Under the provisions of the Derelict Sites Act the Council may:
- impose a derelict sites levy in respect of certain sites entered in the register - remove the dereliction and recover the costs incurred from the owner/occupier - compulsorily acquire derelict sites.
